Here is an example of a poster that one of the 1st grade classes created. The drawing was a collaborative effort and the students independently identified the various Elements and Principles that they used as they added things into the picture to improve it! Then we used the list to spark an artistic conversation about the art! What started out as a boring yellow rectangle is now a beautiful enchanted castle!
Students from grades K-6 have started talking and writing about art! I am extremely proud of the discussions that have been taking place! We have had thoughtful and insightful things to say about art, and forming "million dollar phrases" that are opinions (complements/suggestions/ideas) that incorporate both an Element of Art and a Principle of Design, and recognizing them in artwork! Students have completed the process of describing the artwork, analyzing what they see, interpreting meaning and speculating about what the artist was trying to say with the piece, and then drawing conclusions about the work, giving complements and sharing new ideas with one another. This has helped us build a stronger community in the art studio where we look at art as a form of expression and new perspectives, and where self-reflection is a tool to help us grow together as artists!

Square 1 Art planning has begun! This year, a theme/topic was selected for each grade. Students are free to interpret the topics however they want and many have already begun to excitedly sketch out some ideas! If you are in 7th or 8th grade, remember that you can also submit a design!!! This will make a great keep-sake to remember your final years as a student at ECS! (K-6 have word topics to allow artistic freedom while maintaining unity, however since 7th and 8th graders do not have art class regularly, there are no topics specified for these grades.)
Hello everyone! I wanted to say a quick thank you for stopping in the art room on Back to School Night! I thoroughly enjoyed meeting you and talking a bit about what the students will be studying in art this year. For those of you who were not able to make it to Back to School Night, or did not have a chance to stop in the art room, here are some photos of some of the projects (in progress at the time) that students were working on from each grade/seminar class! I'm so proud of all of the work they have done and the insightful and mature conversations about art that all of the students have been having in class. ***Check out the galleries for finished work as the students complete their projects!*** Check out the seminar galleries for some new pictures of projects that have just been uploaded! Nice job, seminar students!!! You worked hard and the results are extremely impressive!!! Looking forward to the next project! ;-)
Welcome to the Art Studio blog! I can't believe that we are already nearing the end of October! It feels like school just started! Students at ECS have been very busy this month in the art studio. The Kindergarten studied Byzantine mosaics and created their own fall leaf mosaics with Byzantine-inspired sparkling backgrounds and flat figures that they created using warm colored square tiles. First grade learned about Gothic art and stained glass windows before constructing their own out of construction paper, wax paper, tissue paper, and glue! Second grade created sand paintings using symmetry and figures inspired by nature, weather, etc. These paintings were inspired by Native American sand paintings. Third grade studied Greek art and created red and black prints of heroes inspired by Greek vase paintings. Meanwhile, fourth grade learned about Egyptian art. They studied the ancient pharaohs, King Tut, tombs, pyramids, and hieroglyphics. In small groups, each group created its own life-size sarcophagus and death mask. Fifth grade learned about Romanesque art and illuminated manuscripts. They then applied this knowledge to the creation of their own name paintings with each square and letter design representing an aspect of their personalities or interests. Lastly, sixth grade studied African art and learned about African tribal mask design. They applied the concepts and characteristics to create their own African masks. I am very proud of all the beautiful artwork and great efforts put in by all of the students! Bravo!!! In addition, students throughout the school have learned about and applied the Elements of Art and Principles of Design! Students have held very thoughtful and insightful conversations in class about artwork and they have been introduced to the simple steps of art critique. Everyone has done a wonderful job expanding their thinking as artists and coming up with million dollar phrases! ***Also, the Illustration Thursday Art Challenge begins this November! Be sure to check the website for the November topic!*** Have a fantastic week and be sure to check out the galleries soon, as students complete artwork and have their Display Days, photos of artwork will be uploaded to the galleries! :) Nikki |
