Gauguin and van Gogh were briefly roommates in France! In 1890, both artists painted the same farmhouse! Can you tell which painting of a farmhouse was done by which artist? Fourth graders can!
Students have been having some dynamic art discussions so far this year! I would like to give a shout out to the fourth graders who learned about Paul Gauguin today! They participated in a discussion about his painting style, analyzed some work, and compared and contrasted Gauguin with Vincent van Gogh! I was very proud of the sophisticated discussions that took place! Gauguin and van Gogh were briefly roommates in France! In 1890, both artists painted the same farmhouse! Can you tell which painting of a farmhouse was done by which artist? Fourth graders can! Click the self portraits below to find out who painted which painting! Were you right?!

Welcome back to another fun year in the art room! I am excited to be revealing this new and improved ECS Art Studio website!
This year our art curriculum is focusing more specifically on the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. I am very excited to be presenting art with this different approach in mind since the elements are the building blocks of art and the principles are how you use them! In the past we have approached learning art by country, culture, master artists and their works, literature, or time period. Taking things back to the basics and building upon art knowledge (throughout the year, year to year) from a design perspective, while incorporating all of those things along the way, seems like a refreshing and sensible approach. In September, we started our year with a unit on line and pattern. October's unit focused on shape. Now that November has arrived, we will be beginning our unit on color! This is one of my personal favorites! Below is a bulletin board outside of the art room that displays some examples of artists (past and present) who have used color in their artwork in all different ways! Stop outside the art room to check it out! Today is officially the first day of fall, the Autumnal Equinox! I hope you had a wonderful summer vacation and are well rested and ready to start a new school year. I know that the calendar year starts in January and that spring is known for its sense of new beginnings, but for me it is the coming of September and the feeling of Autumn that stirs in me a sense of renewal. Seeking inspiration in the season, students in grades K-6 have begun the year with a Fall Art unit. These projects are colorful and the perfect way to start a new art journey this year, instilling in us a renewed love of warm colors, crisp air, and fresh beginnings. Welcome back, everyone. :-) Hello everyone!

Hello Elysian family!
Welcome to a new school year! I hope you had a wonderful summer and are ready for an amazing new year in art class! We have a beautiful new building with bright shiny walls to fill up with our artwork! Already, K - 6 have their Unit One: Art & Literature projects completed and hanging! (You can see the hanging pieces in the Student Galleries.) Middle school art seminar students have also been working hard to add to the beauty of the school! In the Community Art seminar, students have been working diligently to produce beautifully designed and constructed bulletin boards and art pieces to also hang in the hallways and in the stairwells! Slowly but surely we are building a beautiful representation of the artistic creativity within our student body and school community! In the Project Runway seminar, students have been feverishly working to complete their first project where they created businesses and designed and constructed formal wear made out of duct tape in anticipation of the fashion show at the end of the semester! Students, I am so proud of the hard work that you have done! I cannot tell you how many people (parents, teachers, and students) have told me how impressive and gorgeous your work is. It has truly made our school hallways feel full and rich with warmth and color! Bravo! What is going on in the art studio???
Quick Update: Art Critique: The students have been doing an amazing job finishing up their first round of projects and completing their critiques! There have been some truly remarkable conversations in class about art, all the way from Kindergarten through sixth grade! The Kindergarteners, first graders, and second graders have been completing TAG reviews where we learned how to start art conversations. "T" stands for "Tell something you like." "A" stands for "Ask a question." "G" stands for "Give a positive suggestion." Third and fourth graders have been starting to have art conversations as well as beginning to think critically and write about art. Fifth and sixth graders have been thinking critically and analyzing art, creating art critique presentations that discuss the four categories of critique (describe, analyze, interpret, judge). Projects that will be appearing on the website and coming home soon: K - Byzantine Leaf Mosaics 1 - Stained Glass Windows 2 - Native American Dreamcatchers 3 - Greek Vase Prints of a Hero 4 - Ancient Egyptian Sarcophagus and Death Mask (group project) 5 - Illuminated Manuscript Name Pictures 6 - African Masks New Structure: This year in art we have been implementing some new ideas! All of the students are divided into small groups. (There are four small groups in each class.) On a rotating schedule, each group will complete project sessions as well as "Studio Series" which are mini lessons that review the art history and concepts learned in class, and "Drawing Lab" which provides mini lessons on art elements (line, space/form, color, value, texture, space/perspective) and design principles (pattern, rhythm/movement, proportion/scale, balance, unity, emphasis). The students have been doing a terrific job with this new structure in class!!! I am impressed with the level of creativity and innovative thinking! HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYONE!!!! ENJOY BREAK!!!!!!!! :-) Hello everyone!
I know it's been a while, but I wanted to share something that I found very interesting! The Art Journaling Seminar class is going really well this semester! I'm pleased to hear that students are thoroughly enjoying creating journal entries. Here is an interesting article with tips on keeping a sketchbook! Also, as some of you may know, I am a huge fan of Katie Rodgers, the fashion illustrator. Here are three sketchbook recommendations from Katie if you are interested in a sketchbook that you can create watercolor paintings in! Happy sketching!!! FIRST "WEEK OF SCHOOL" DOWN, that is!!! Woohoo!!! Congrats, students, on an awesome first week of school and art!!! I hope you had an inspiring first week back and are ready to learn new and exciting things this semester! Don't forget that the first Illustration Thursday topic is up so take the challenge!!!
This weekend I challenge everyone to be explorers! Observe the world around you! In art this week many students discussed geometric shapes like squares, circles, triangles, etc. Can you find geometric shapes in the world around you? At home? At school? At the park? In the grocery store? Walking in town? Have an amazing weekend! ~Nikki Hello everyone!
Welcome back for another exciting school year!!! I have some new and fun things in the works for our artists this year and I cannot wait to see all of the wonderful pieces that you will create in the months to come! Check out the website often because I will be posting new images and inspiration often! I encourage everyone to participate in the first Illustration Thursday challenge! The new topic is posted on the site! Good luck in the new school year! :-) Nikki |
